We have a created a new position in a growing brewery and a new tap room based in Liverpool city centre, aiming to be operational by the start of December. Our Lead brewer requires an assistant who can help them make beautiful sweet wort, help with day-to-day management of fermentation, control quality throughout the process, clean, package finished beer and represent Carnival Brewing Company out and about.

Are you the person we’re looking for? Our ideal applicant will have:

  • A passion for crafting lovely things with a real focus on quality. Having previously home brewed would be an advantage, but we offer a training programme where if you’ve never brewed before, you will learn the ropes working with a top-draw professional brewer

  • Good sanitary habits. Cleanliness is absolutely essential throughout the brewing process. So you will be happy to clean the brewery, the used tanks, drains and whatever else needs to be kept sparkling clean so that whatever we produce is packaged and sold rather than drain-poured

  • Good analytical and mechanical abilities. When equipment breaks you may be required to Google how to fix something if required

  • Good safety habits. Brewing can be really dangerous with boiling hot wort, toxic chemicals and various hazards, so you must be able to work safely with caustics, acids, high temperatures, high pressures, carbon dioxide, oxygen, trip hazards and heavy loads

  • Excellent punctuality and reliability – we’re a small team so this is important

  • A love of early morning starts to make sure the brewing day finishes in time for the tap room to open – plus our lead brewer likes to get started early to make the most of the day

  • The ability to work alone while remaining goal oriented and motivated without being delegated to

  • Attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills

  • Physically fit and comfortable lifting 25kg grain bags and repeatedly lifting full kegs and casks (30kg)

  • Good mathematical and computing skills

  • A full and clean driving license

We’re starting out as a small team so you may be asked to do other things including: brewery tours and working behind the bar so flexibility is absolutely key.

You will also need to be persistent and positive. Brewing often takes you down unexpected paths despite great planning and process management, so you will have to be able to cope with the unexpected demands of the job.

The responsibilities of an Assistant Brewer include but not limited to:

  • Manual handling malt, kegs, casks, hops, cleaning chemicals, etc

  • Brewing on our pilot system, assisting on our 1600 litre production system

  • Packaging duties, including filling casks, kegs and when we get one, a canning line

  • Cellar work including tank cleaning, racking and other transfer duties

  • Assisting on the Carnival social media accounts to get our message out to those who care

  • Digging out the mash tun and cleaning the kettle

  • Occasional bar working during busy periods

  • Occasional local dray runs and when necessary cask/keg collection

This position is currently a 30 hours per week post (Monday-Friday), depending on workload and level of responsibility this will likely rise to 38 hours. Occasional duties on weekends may be required.

An hourly rate will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

What can we promise the successful applicant?

  • Energetic and vibrant working environment

  • Great training and career package

  • Good hourly pay

  • Loads of opportunities to join a small company and opportunities to move upwards as the company grows

  • A wide variety of duties giving you plenty of opportunities to gain experience in a complex process

The new brewhouse and tap room are currently being built, with the aim to commence testing and brewing in early December. A start date will be negotiated upon job offer stage but it’s anticipated you will need to be available at the start of December for a hectic couple of weeks of brewing to make sure we have stock for Christmas and the new year.
